Verstappen: I didn’t think it would be good at the beginning of the year

The 2022 championship, with Max Verstappen winning his second title and Red Bull Racing winning the Constructors’ Championship, will surely go down in Formula 1 history as an example of an almost perfect season.

At one time, the 1988 classic season was attributed to this category, when McLaren drivers achieved 15 wins in 16 Grand Prix, i.e. it is more than 93%. In the case of Red Bull Racing, the percentage of victories and the number of stages are slightly less, but the performance of the team from Milton Keynes is no less impressive, because on the 17 victories of Verstappen and Sergio Pérez, two sprints on Saturday, who also were won by the Dutchman should be added.

In an interview with Swedish TV channel Viaplay, which broadcasts throughout Northern Europe, the two-time world champion summed up the year.

Max Verstappen: “I didn’t expect the season to go so well, especially at the start of the season it didn’t seem that way. The whole Red Bull team is really happy. I understand that the years when there were 15 wins are not often given, because until 2022 I only had 12 wins. And now their number has increased by 15 in one season, it’s just incredible.

When I won the French Grand Prix (a race led by Charles Leclerc, but he made a mistake, went off the track and crashed the car), I thought: “Now the title is ours. If there’s not a lot of bad luck , then everything will go as it should.” By then we were already leading with a big advantage and I thought we wouldn’t lose it. In fact, it has only gotten better since the race in France.”

Verstappen is now part of the elite club of two-time world champions, which now has seven riders from different eras. In addition to Max, these are Alberto Ascari, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Emerson Fittipaldi, Mika Hakkinen and Fernando Alonso.

“Who would have thought that everything would turn out like this! When I started racing, I never thought about it. But now I hope I won’t stop there! Max added.
