Hannah Schmitz, Red Bull Racing’s chief strategist, is rightly credited as the co-author of many of the championship team’s wins. She is known for rarely being wrong, and in most cases the tactical plans developed under her guidance allowed Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez to achieve success in races.
Now Hannah Schmitz has gained more recognition as the top female engineer in international motorsport. Electronics supplier McLaren Applied launched a special Female Engineer of the Year Award this year and Red Bull Racing’s Chief Strategist has become the first winner of this “professional excellence contest”.
According to a brief official statement from McLaren’s press office, “The judges were impressed with her ability to strategize and make successful split-second decisions under pressure.”
Other contenders for the award also included Australia’s Christina Emmanuilides, a CFD engineer for Alfa Romeo, and Britain’s Charlotte Phelps, who used to work in Mercedes’ strategy department before continuing her career in other racing series, including the Women’s W Series.
