On the first day of testing, Mercedes worked on its program, focusing on gathering information and evaluating the reliability of various systems. There was no build-up, chief race engineer Andrew Shovlin said the car worked flawlessly and the drivers were happy.
Lewis Hamilton (6th): “It’s nice to be back behind the wheel here in Bahrain. The day was not hot, although windy. We completed our program, collected a lot of data.
The car’s reliability allowed us to cover long distances – this is the result of the hard work of our engineers in Brackley and Brixworth. You have to concentrate on yourself, keep working and not be distracted by rivals. Now it is difficult to assess the joining of forces, but we will certainly add to that in the coming days.”
George Russell (9th): “It was interesting to get the first real experience with the W14. It’s still too early to judge our speed compared to our rivals, but the first day went without a hitch, we learned a lot. There are many positive moments. In the coming days we will try to get the most out of the machine.”
