Carlos Sainz: We are concerned about reliability issues

Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz said he was concerned about the reliability issues faced by his teammate Charles Leclerc at the opening race of the season in Bahrain. However, Carlos believes the team in Saudi Arabia has a chance to compete for a spot on the podium.

Carlos Sainz: “The first weekend of the season was difficult for the team, but I think we did our best. Of course a penalty for Charles in Jeddah is not the best scenario, but we will only have the first races. The 2022 season has shown that we will not necessarily be in the same position at the end of the year as we were at the beginning. We will continue to work to make the car the best it can be.

Of course we are concerned about reliability issues – not at all how we wanted to start the season – with a penalty after the first race. The team is dissatisfied with the battery issue in the first stage. We found out what caused it – for the first time in a long time, a similar problem occurred, which was a surprise.

We are taking steps to resolve the issue and are confident that we will do so quickly. An unfortunate situation, but all we can do is look ahead, solve the problem and try to make sure we are more competitive next weekend.

The track is radically different from Bahrain: different asphalt, higher speeds and downforce settings. I feel we will be more competitive, but will we be able to compete with Red Bull? Given their form in Bahrain it will be very difficult to do, but I am optimistic and I think we have a chance to get back to the podium this weekend.

When asked if there were any reliability issues in Pirelli testing after the Bahrain race, Carlos was terse: “No.”
