The last time Nico Hulkenberg appeared in Melbourne was in 2019. The configuration of the Australian circuit has now been adjusted and the Haas driver is looking forward to exploring the upcoming Australian Grand Prix weekend.
Q: Everyone in the Formula 1 paddock is happy to go back to Melbourne. What’s so special about it?
Nico Hulkenberg: Melbourne is a cool and vibrant city. Traveling to Australia takes a long time but everyone loves it and I have made many friends here over the years. Looking forward to returning.
Q: You have not performed in Australia since 2019. Do you like the job? What characteristic features distinguish it from other tracks?
Nico Hulkenberg: Since the last time I competed at Albert Park in 2019, the track has undergone minor changes – some corners have become faster, making the track faster. There are a lot of DRS zones here, so I’m looking forward to testing the new faster performance.
Q: In Melbourne, as in Jeddah, the track is surrounded by walls. Do you prefer these kind of circuits or do you prefer “old school” circuits where you can experiment with racing lines?
Nico Hulkenberg: I think in Formula 1 they have achieved a good ratio between old-school and new circuits. City tracks combine the features of both, so I think we’re doing everything right.
Q: After the Melbourne stage in Formula 1 there will be a break of almost a month due to the cancellation of the race in Shanghai. How important is this break mentally and physically for the riders?
Nico Hulkenberg: Initially, this break was not planned, but we agree. It’s good that there will be an opportunity to evaluate the first three races, regroup with the team and move on. A big break at the start of the season is not quite what we would like, but everyone is on an equal footing.
