Fernando Alonso’s third place and Lance Stroll’s fourth place at the finish of the Australian Grand Prix put Aston Martin on 27 points, their best result of the season. The team secured second place in the Constructors’ Championship, taking the lead over Mercedes to nine points.
Fernando Alonso (3e): “Today we experienced a real emotional rollercoaster. It was probably the craziest race in Melbourne, but it’s great to get another podium.
A lot happened today and I got into an interesting battle with Lewis Hamilton for second. We had high speed and I put pressure on Lewis, but he did a great job and didn’t make any mistakes. As for the contact with Carlos Sainz on the restart, I’m sure he didn’t want something like that, so I think the penalty is too harsh.
We are happy with the start of the season – three podiums in three races.”
Lance walk (4th): “I think we should be happy with third and fourth place – a great result for the team. The course of the race was heavily affected by red flags and several major incidents, but Fernando and I managed to stay out of trouble in this drama.
I had a little contact on the first lap, but after that I had a good race until the first red flags. We already saw over the weekend that the tires take some time to warm up – on the second restart I locked up the wheels in turn three and ended up in the gravel. Fortunately, red flags had appeared earlier and I regained my position for the final restart. Sometimes sport turns into an emotional swing!
In summary, we can say that we earned a lot of points in a chaotic race. Second place in the Constructors’ Championship after three rounds is a very positive result.”
Mike Crack, team leader: “What a race! Today everything that can be imagined happened, and 27 points for third and fourth place was a brilliant reward for the team.
The race proved to be a tough race as the early first red flags were to monitor hard tire wear. Almost everyone tried to ride them to the finish, so it was an exciting battle in the top ten. Fernando didn’t let go of Lewis, but they had the same race pace, so they couldn’t get close enough to battle for second.
Lance fought hard the whole distance and controlled tire wear very well. There was chaos at the restart and I must say I was relieved when the running order was restored. I know some drivers and teams lost in this turmoil, but we were lucky that both cars were not seriously damaged and were able to finish behind the safety car.
Thank you and congratulations to all the team at Silverstone and on track for another great result, the perfect performance from both cars and the third podium of the year. Today we celebrate the result, but tomorrow we will focus on the next race in Baku.”
