In Melbourne, Alpine riders Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon were able to score points, but two laps to go collided and retired. Sports director Otmar Szafnauer tried to find a positive outcome of the Australian weekend.
Otmar Szafnauer: “We are disappointed to leave Melbourne without any points. On the other hand, the team can be satisfied with the speed of the car. In the race our pace was close to the rivals, we were able to defend and show composure when needed.
Pierre drove well and spent most of the race in fifth place, fighting for the podium with Mercedes, Aston Martin and Ferrari. We should remember these positive moments and use them as motivation in the future.
Esteban was unlucky at the start of the race, but he did well and worked his way to the points with some excellent overtakes.
Unfortunately, both our riders dropped out during the third start. I’m glad they’re okay given the nature of the incident. We will keep moving forward – it is difficulties like this that bring the team together.
The team is already looking forward to the race in Baku, where we plan to bring updates to the car.”
