Four-time Formula 1 champion Alain Prost believes most teams are in crisis. He wrote about this in a column after the Australian Grand Prix, advising rivals to follow Aston Martin’s example.
Alain Prost: “We see a strange start to the season. Everywhere we look, we see that things are not going well, and in a sense this is already a crisis. And the crisis is on all levels.
We see factory teams or teams with a rich history that are in trouble. For example McLaren – not only are they not adding, but they are rolling back every year. There is Alpine, which, when it progresses, is very slow.
When we talk about Mercedes, they stick to their universally recognized innovative concept, but it’s clear that it doesn’t work.
At Red Bull, the entire system is built around one driver: Max Verstappen. This approach used to work well in the past, but now we are seeing the first signs of failure. Sergio Perez has already settled into the team and understands that he can win. He no longer wants to compromise in order not to lose his place.
Even if Red Bull’s dominance continues, the coming weeks will be crucial for the reigning world champions. It is clear that anything can happen at any moment, because even if you are at the top, the crisis can wait nearby.
Ferrari decided to bring new blood and new leadership to the team, and foreign ones, but today they don’t have the results we would like to see. And the results will not come soon.
Aston Martin drew a line under the 2022 car last year and agreed to reinvent itself. They changed drivers without hesitation and invited Fernando Alonso to replace Sebastian Vettel. It took them a while to understand their intent, but now the team is at the top and far removed from the crisis that everyone else is going through. They taught the other teams a lesson.”
