For Haas F1, the Azerbaijani weekend didn’t start too well: Mick Schumacher missed almost all of the first practice session due to car problems: one of the cooling system lines was badly secured on his VF-22, leading to a leak.
There were no such difficulties in the second session, however, both riders of the American team were only at the end of the second ten.
Kevin Magnussen (17th): “It’s interesting to fly on this runway, I like it. Driving on a city track is always more emotional, here you have to go close to the limit of what is possible, which gives me pleasure.
The car made a good impression, although we weren’t very fast in the second practice, which surprised us – compared to the first session we were noticeably rolling back. Usually we look better in the second session, but today it was the opposite and now we have to figure out what this has to do with. But I have a positive attitude, usually this race is a crazy scenario, so there is still a lot to come.”
Mick Schumacher (19th): “It seems that the coolant leak issues were due to a strong build-up that manifested itself on the very first lap, which ruined all our plans.
It was the first time I only felt this physically, I felt uncomfortable in the car and when preparing for the next races these things have to be taken into account.
The tires on this track do not wear too intensively, although the surface temperature of the asphalt is of course very high here. It will be interesting to analyze all this in more detail, which we will do in preparation for the race.
Gunther Steinerteam leader: “The start of the first practice was not successful, Mik’s car started to leak coolant and he could not work on the track and on such a city ring as in Baku this is bad.
Something strange has happened, and we’re actually lucky that the same thing didn’t happen to Kevin’s car. But for the second session we got everything in order.
In fact, for Magnussen the first practice went well, but for the second we made some adjustments to the settings, after which we couldn’t show the speeds we expected. So we will have to work in the evening and see what we can do to increase the speed of the car a bit tomorrow.”
