The eighth hour of the race at Le Mans is drawing to a close and in the leading group there have been certain changes, perhaps temporary. When night fell on the Sarte ring, all sorts of incidents began.
The Porsche of the Proton Competition team (GTE Pro) and the Ferrari of the AF Corse team (GTE Am) collided first in the Indianapolis corner. At the time, at the wheel of the 911 was also Michael Fassbender, a film actor of Irish-German descent, a Hollywood star and part-time racing driver.
Yellow flags appeared for a while, but the cars made it to the pits and returned to the track after some time, although both teams lost many positions.
Then, on the corner of Tertre Rouge, the Glickenhouse #708 hypercar, driven by Olivier Pla, took off. It appears to be an experienced professional, but he made a mistake by attacking the curb too aggressively. The rear of the car was damaged, but the Frenchman was able to reach his team’s garage. The mechanics got to work and ten minutes later the car returned to battle, but only in 17th position.
Therefore, two LMP2 sports prototypes have already entered the top five of the absolute standings – the fourth was António Felix da Costa on the JOTA team’s Oreca, and the fifth position was taken by the Prema Racing crew and car No. 63 was piloted by Robert Kubica. Although of course they lost four rounds to the leaders.
The two works Toyotas continued to confidently lead each other, less than two seconds apart, while the No. 709 Glickenhouse, in third position, was already two laps behind – that’s the difference between hybrid hypercars and conventional 3.5-litre V8s -engines.
Something tells me these won’t be the only night-phase marathon incidents.
