After qualifying, Max Verstappen admitted a mistake on the first attempt in the final and was unable to pass the second, as the session was halted due to red flags after Charles Leclerc’s accident.
Red Bull race advisor Helmut Marko said on German Sky that the failure of Max, who only started ninth, is not due to his racer, but to Ferrari’s Monegask.
Helmut Marko: “I would make a joke about not being able to qualify for Leclerc. Max had a lot of bad luck on his last attempt. In the first he drove a bit more spacious, in the second we should have left a bit earlier. There was time for that and the speed of the car made it possible to confidently take a place in the front two rows.
Max wanted to give it his all on the last try to get the most out of it. The later you leave, the faster the track, but in this case we made the wrong decision.
I’m happy that Sergio took pole. This is his second home race after Mexico City, he has incredible support here. In every session he learned, and in qualifying he did everything right. In recent years he was always half a second or a second behind Max, but now they are very close.
