Carlos Sainz: We have reliability issues again

For Ferrari, the race in Baku ended with the first double retirement of the season – Carlos Sainz retired due to hydraulic problems and the power plant in Charles Leclerc’s car failed.

Charles dropped from second to third in the individual standings, passing Sergio Perez. In the Constructors’ Championship, Ferrari’s backlog of Red Bull Racing has grown to eighty points.

Carlos Sainz (retirement): “For the first nine laps I took care of the tires to attack closer to the pit stop. By the time it was time to add, the hydraulics failed – that was the end of my race. It’s a shame Charles didn’t finish today either – we have a double retirement.

Difficult day for Ferrari, but we are a team and together we will overcome difficult moments. Today is probably the most frustrating moment of the season, but we’ll get through it.

We’re having reliability issues again, but that’s not only troubling, but the fact that our attempts to run two weekends in a row have so far failed. It’s especially unpleasant that I stopped on the ninth lap, when I was just getting ready to attack. It’s a shame that the season is going this way for me, but we will make up for it. The most important thing is to remain patient and optimistic.”

Charles Leclerc (retirement): “I am beyond upset by these results. We were fast in the first stint – I was overtaking Sergio on Medium tyres, then the virtual safety car came on and we decided this was a great time for a pit stop. The decision turned out to be the right one, I was leading the race, checking the condition of the tires. I had the best position on the track to get to the finish, but…

It hurts to get off again because it affects the chances in the championship very badly. I just don’t have words for it, I feel a huge disappointment, but I hope we can win back.
