McLaren drivers compared to Hamilton and Button

Comparing the driving styles of racers is a very interesting subject, but when the McLaren team is asked how the driving styles of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri differ, it is not so easy to answer this question.

As explained in the team, we must immediately make a reservation that Formula 1 cars in recent years require a very specific style of driving. Therefore, when analyzing the work approaches that characterize the various racers now competing in the championship, it will inevitably become clear that the differences in their working style behind the wheel are less noticeable than in representatives of previous generations. of riders.

Given that Lando has only driven McLaren cars in F1, it’s impossible to say exactly what his natural preferences might be. Oscar’s experience in this regard is somewhat varied.

Piastri when cornering is more characteristic of simultaneous control of the brakes and steering wheel – this allows you to maintain a slightly higher speed while overcoming the turn. But Norris prefers more intensive braking on the entrance to the corner, which makes it possible to get into it better, but at the same time some losses are inevitable on the exit.

At Silverstone, for example, you see Lando go a little deeper into Brooklands corner, while Oscar tries to keep a flatter track, which in turn allows for a better entry into Luffield.

All this is vaguely reminiscent of the differences in driving style of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton when they were teammates at McLaren. Although in the case of Lando and Oscar, this difference is less noticeable.

It is impossible to say which of them handles more correctly, but it is clear that one style is more suitable for some turns and another for some. With the exception of the features mentioned, McLaren drivers’ approaches to driving are largely similar, and this is in the hands of the team, as it allows more valuable information to be gathered about the car’s behavior during Friday practice.
