Jenson Button made his debut in the American IMSA series yesterday and, together with his teammates in the crew of the Porsche 963 hypercar of the JDC Motorsports team, drove a 10-hour race at the Road Atlanta circuit.
The trio Button, Mike Rockenfeller and Thijmen van der Helm took 5th place in the Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) category – this is the IMSA name for the class in which sports prototypes with hybrid power plants compete, i.e. hypercars LMDh and LMH.
The result is not bad, considering Button had virtually no time for preparation and testing.
The season finale in IMSA is also called Petit Le Mans. “small Le Mans”, and Jenson briefly summarized the results as follows: “5th place in Petit LeMans. I really enjoyed the experience, although it was the most chaotic race I have ever taken part in, with four different classes of cars on the track at the same time!
Have I become infected with the desire to continue racing hypercars? Certainly!!! Thank you to JDC Motorsports, Mike and Thijman for inviting us to join our team!”
Judging by the emotional tone of the comment of the 2009 world champion, he is ready to repeat this experience more than once, and it will be easier for him to decide on plans for the near future, which we talked about a few days ago had.
And the race was won by the crew of the American team Meyer Shank Racing, consisting of Tom Blomqvist, Colin Brown and Helio Castroneves, at the wheel of a sports prototype Acura ARX-06.
