WEC: Mick Schumacher was starting to get to grips with the Alpine hypercar

Today, the Alpine World Endurance Championship team is testing at the Spanish circuit in Jerez and Mick Schumacher’s first encounter with the new A424 hypercar has already taken place.

The Alpine Endurance Team was founded on the basis of French team Signatech, and leader Philippe Sinault said a “short programme” was organized for Mick.

“Mick has a certain interest in endurance racing and we can offer him his first experience in the WEC,” Sportscar365 quotes Sino. “He drove our car for the first time and was usually behind the wheel of a sports prototype for the first time. The question is not whether he can handle it, but we need to understand his level, business approach and psychological attitude.

I won’t tell you the exact number of laps, but first, so that he could get his first experience in endurance racing, we prepared a short program for him. The aim is to give him a good idea of the possible program in the WEC, and for us it is important to get to know Mick. But we don’t know yet how his future career will develop and whether our collaboration will go, but this was the very first contact.”

According to Sino, there are no plans to continue working with Schumacher on tests and the decision has not yet been made that the son of the seven-time world champion will make his debut in endurance racing in 2024.

“I don’t know if Mick will work with us or maybe another team,” he said. “But because he is interested in this type of racing, we had a conversation about participating in tests and offered him this opportunity. And then we’ll see.”

In the tests in Jerez, in addition to Schumacher, the A424 will be driven by French drivers Charles Milesi and Nicolas Lapierre, as well as Brazilian Andre Negrao. By the way, the Alpine hypercar has been painted in the team’s traditional colors for the first time, while in previous tests it was simply black.
