On Friday, Haas F1 worked with three drivers – Ferrari Youth Academy member Oliver Berman took the wheel in the first session…
Oliver Berman (15th in the first session): “First of all I wanted to avoid mistakes, which ended up happening. I quickly picked up speed, was confident in the car, although it was the first time I worked on soft tires, it was the first time I drove such a long segment behind the wheel of a Formula 1 – I know I that will do better next time, but I’m happy with the first try.
I was surprised how much faster you could get into the first corner during the qualifying simulation. The boys told me the best way to act. It was all over too quickly, but I am back behind the wheel in the simulator to get ready for Abu Dhabi.”
Nico Hulkenberg (15th): “Difficult day. Every year in Mexico City we face the same problem: thin air, which causes very obvious side effects. And we weren’t feeling our best, and the results left a lot to be desired. We have to work at night to achieve more on Saturday.”
Kevin Magnussen (19th): “The speed wasn’t enough. I didn’t run long runs on the Medium, only the Soft, and they quickly became worn and gritty. We tried to see if Soft could be used in a race, but it seems like it can’t.
After Friday it is difficult to judge the balance of power, and today I did not learn much, because I missed the first session. Hopefully I can try other formulations tomorrow.”
