Riccardo: It wasn’t a race, it was an upset

The problems Daniel Ricciardo encountered at the British Grand Prix should seriously alarm McLaren, as the team felt that Silverstone would be a better match for the MCL36 car in its characteristics than several previous circuits.

At the FIA press conference in Spielber, Ricciardo expressed fears that there was too little time for the Austrian stage and that one may not have time to find out the reasons for what had happened.

Daniel Ricciardo: “Certainly my race at Silverstone was a bit hopeless, we had a huge lack of speed and the car was just very, very slow.

To be honest, we still continue to understand the reasons for what happened, trying to understand them. On the one hand it is good that the races are back to back and we will try to win back right away, on the other hand it is clear that we have very little time to make an accurate diagnosis.

The easiest way to explain the difficulties is that there was no clutch at all, I felt like I couldn’t hold the cars in front of me and I was afraid they would just flip me over. Simply put, it felt like the MCL36 didn’t offer the level of grip that other machines struggled with.

Overall, I was just on another level in this regard. Over the course of the circle, the backlog piled up – it can’t be said that most of the difficulties were in a single turn, while everything else went well. Clutch deficiencies showed up everywhere.

All this, of course, was puzzling. Generally not a breed, just one condition. Maybe it’s a good thing I don’t worry about it for a long time.”
