George Russell worked alone behind the wheel of a Mercedes on the first day of testing in Bahrain. The British driver completed 121 laps and set the twelfth fastest time. The team did not aim for fast times and spent almost the entire day working on long sets of laps.
George Russell (12th): “It was great to experience the possibilities of the W15 for the first time. From the start I felt like we had a good foundation to work from. I drove a lot of laps and collected a lot of information. We ended the day well and based on the information received today we will continue our work over the next two days.
Today we focused on driving the maximum distance and learning as much as possible about the car. We didn’t try to get the most out of it. Overall, the W15 is more fun to drive than last year’s car.
We know it’s not the feel of the car that matters, it’s the speed. In any case, I already said that it was important today to learn as much as possible and not to rush for speed. During these tests we are focused on our own tasks, and only next week can we assess where we stand compared to others.
Positive first day. I’m looking forward to getting behind the wheel again on Friday.”
