Mick Schumacher commented on the results of his debut in the WEC

Last weekend Mick Schumacher made his debut in the World Endurance Championship and, together with his Alpine crewmates, took 13th place in the Qatar 1812 km.

At the same time, the trio, which in addition to the son of the seven-time world champion also includes the experienced French racers Nicolas Lapierre and Mathieu Vaxivière, started from 14th place based on the results of qualifying.

Perhaps the result could have been slightly higher, but during the ten hours of the race the crew of the hypercar with tail number 36 had to overcome serious difficulties. In particular, while driving the sports prototype A424, Mick was unable to avoid an accident with another car, and the consequences of this incident were felt throughout the rest of the race. In total he spent almost four hours behind the wheel, completing 128 laps. In addition, he was the author of the best lap among Alpine racers.

“Finishing was our main goal. “I didn’t even expect to gain so much experience during this race,” Schumacher responded to German TV channel Sport1. “Unfortunately, after contact with another car, serious damage occurred to the front axle area, which caused the speed to drop somewhat, so the mood was not very good.

There is still a lot of work to do and I am looking forward to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, although this race promises to be even more difficult.”

At the same time, Mick continues to work with the Mercedes team as a reserve driver, and during those six weekends of the season, when the stages of the two championships coincide in date, these tasks are carried out by Frederic Vesti, last year’s vice driver. champion of Formula 2. In 2024 he will also make his debut in endurance racing, but in the European Le Mans series.

Mick Schumacher does not hide the fact that he is not going to change his dream: “Returning to Formula 1 remains my dream. I will continue to closely follow everything that happens in this championship, but ultimately I can only offer myself to any team if I show good results. So first of all I want to reach them in the WEC.

I have been racing since I was a kid, I love this activity and last year I really missed it. If you don’t have the opportunity to race, it’s quite difficult. This year I am especially interested in the sporting side of things, because I am finally participating in competitions on the track again.”
