Symonds: By 2026, cars will become more powerful and lighter

The technical director of Formula 1 spoke in the Beyond The Grid podcast about the planned changes to the regulations for the 2026 season…

Pat Symonds: “We expect to be able to increase the power plant’s power to 1,000 hp or more using an electric motor.

We also want to reduce downforce. One of the reasons why modern cars are so heavy is the need to deal with high aerodynamic loads. As a result, the cars will slide more, much will depend on the skill of the racers. It is important. Racers are our heroes, supermen that we want to promote. I think this is a step in the right direction.

We stand for high-quality technology at a reasonable price. When we talk about the regulations adopted in 2022, we talk about the car, about improving racing quality, and we almost do not remember the budget limit. In fact, this factor is key to the future of Formula 1.

My last team was Williams, where we were very poor. Shortly after I left Williams the team had to be sold. And they weren’t the only ones working in such conditions. Then the teams really fought for survival, but now everything is fine. And this is largely due to budget constraints.

New powertrain manufacturers are interested in the technologies we offer, knowing that they don’t have to invest many hundreds of millions of dollars, but that they can learn a lot. Electric motor technology and efficient batteries are a step into the future. People think of lithium-ion batteries, but there are many more technologies, and the most interesting of them will be tested in Formula 1.”

Formula 1 published new regulations for power sources two years ago, but regulations for the chassis have not yet been approved.
