In Suzuka, Formula 1 drivers continued to talk about the incident involving George Russell and Fernando Alonso on the penultimate lap of the Australian Grand Prix. Sergio Perez, commenting on what happened, raised the issue of inconsistency in the stewards’ decisions.
Sergio Perez: “I believe Fernando has crossed the line with his actions. I don’t think this was necessary. But my biggest concern is that if a similar incident occurs this weekend or next weekend, there will probably be no response from the stewards. This concerns me the most because we have seen inconsistency in decision making before.
In Jeddah, for example, there was a 300km/h block involving Oliver Berman and Alex Albon, but no penalties. I blocked Nico Hulkenberg, causing him to lose half a tenth. The next lap he went faster and I lost three places at the start.
I believe that consistency in decision making should be the main topic of discussion. If fines are issued for such incidents, the fines must be issued every weekend. There is nothing more frustrating than a rider working as hard as he can and then seeing such inconsistencies.
I believe we need permanent stewards or more consistency within the FIA to improve consistency in decision-making at every race. Now it feels like everyone is starting over every weekend.
When changing stewards, there is no continuity with the decisions made in the last ten races, for example. Right now we have no pattern and no consistency.”
