Lewis Hamilton took eighth place at the start of the Miami Grand Prix and said after qualifying that he was happy to have reached the final. The seven-time world champion said the team has not yet been able to understand the characteristics of Pirelli tires.
His Mercedes teammate George Russell set the seventh fastest time in qualifying on Saturday.
Lewis Hamilton (8th): “During qualifying, the asphalt temperature remained virtually unchanged and the grip on the track was quite good. The tires are very sensitive and we sometimes have problems getting them to work and reach their full potential. In the second part of qualifying we saw a glimmer of hope, but in the final we were not competitive.
Overall, Saturday went a lot better than Friday. We made progress in the sprint and then in qualifying. Reaching the finals can be considered a positive result. And although the final itself didn’t go so well, I’m happy that I managed to qualify in the top ten.
It’s difficult when you’re eight tenths behind the leaders. We are fighting with Haas and I don’t know if that reflects the actual speed of the car or if it is the tires. We have a lot of problems with the tires and all year we have not been able to find a solution.”
