George Russell won qualifying in Canada, setting the fastest lap in exactly the same time as Max Verstappen. But the Mercedes driver did it first and according to the rules it was he who took pole position.
This rarely happens in motorsports, so anyone who followed the events on the Montreal Circuit Gilles Villeneuve track probably enjoyed this spectacle.
George Russell: “An incredible result and I am very happy! Everyone working in the team has made great efforts to achieve this. Even in Monaco we expressed the hope that some important events will now happen in our season – I think this is true.
I really missed these emotions and I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s race. The first step has been taken, but now we must of course aim for victory.
Of course we will try to compete with Max – why not? We must make such an attempt, because after introducing a number of technical innovations, the car makes an excellent impression and now we are ready to fight. That’s why we’re going to try to win tomorrow.”
