In the closing laps of the Canadian Grand Prix, the Alpine team ordered Esteban Ocon to let teammate Pierre Gasly pass so he could try to attack Daniel Ricciardo. The French racer reluctantly followed instructions and criticized the team after the finish.
Esteban Ocon: “I’m happy that the team earned points with two cars, but the finishing order should have been exactly the other way around. One and a half or two laps before the finish I received instructions to let Pierre pass so he could overtake Daniel, who was two or one and a half seconds ahead. The lead was too big for us, making the team’s order meaningless. But I am a team player and I have done my part.
I always follow the team instructions – I have never acted differently in my career. I did my bit in the race, but the team didn’t, and that’s very sad.
Being too nice is not the right approach in Formula 1, but I have shown that I am a team player and that is the most important thing. We will discuss with the team what happened, but I am not happy with the way it ended.”
