Guanyu Zhou’s contract with Sauber expires at the end of the season and there is a good chance it will not be renewed. However, the Chinese driver remains optimistic and believes he will find a place as the main driver before 2025.
Guanyu Zhou: “I believe the place at Sauber is still vacant, so this option is also there. And of course I have always had very good ties with Alpine. They helped me a lot and when the opportunity arose to make my Formula 1 debut, I was grateful that they allowed me to join Alfa Romeo, as Sauber was then called.
I am open to other teams and willing to discuss my future with them. Nothing has been decided yet, but I feel like there is a place for me on the grid, I just don’t know where yet.
I don’t want to become a reserve driver and I don’t want to miss next season either. At this stage of my career I cannot afford to miss a year in Formula 1 because it will be very difficult to come back. So my option is to try to find a seat for next year, and being a reserve driver is definitely not my option.
If there are no other options left, I will of course consider this possibility, but at the moment I am not thinking about it.”
