Max Verstappen qualified second in Barcelona, 0.020 seconds behind polesitter Lando Norris. The current world champion was not particularly angry and said that the biggest battle would take place in the race.
His teammate Sergio Perez set the eighth fastest time and will lose three places at the start due to a penalty he received in the last stage in Canada.
Max Verstappen (2nd): “I think everything in qualifying could have gone a little better. We try to find the optimal balance all weekend long. But I’m quite happy with the results of qualifying. In the final Sergio got me going, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. Sometimes this happens, but we can still be happy with our achievements. The main events will take place tomorrow.
Did Sergio break me up? It was an opportunity, although at the time I didn’t know which part of the circle he was in, but the team told me where he was and I decided I would try to stay behind him.
During qualifying the wind increased slightly, which made the final a bit more difficult. But overall a good performance by the team.”
Sergio Perez (8th): “Difficult qualification. Unfortunately, I couldn’t put all the pieces together when it mattered in the qualifying final. My circle was not as clean as it should have been. Unfortunately, what I did wasn’t enough.
I start eleventh due to a penalty, so it will be a tough race. I will do everything I can to regain positions and break through to the top. If we manage to get a few points, it will be the result of great work from the whole team.”
