The Visa RB team prepared a whole range of new products for the Spanish phase of the season, but not only did they not work – Yuki Tsunode felt very uncomfortable behind the wheel and at a press conference in Austria he was asked about the reasons for the difficulties.
Yuki Tsunoda: “I hope I get a clear explanation this weekend. Naturally, the team will do everything they can to sort everything out. For some reason the machine was not working properly and we have already identified some conditions that could lead to problems, but there are still no definitive answers.
The cause of the problems remains a mystery to us, although we could have done better in some areas, especially when working with institutions. However, this does not explain why we lost so much in Spain compared to previous races.
Of course in Austria we will try some new approaches, and this applies to both cars. Although the weekend program includes a sprint, we try to get answers to all questions as quickly as possible. The team has prepared some new features for this weekend, but we can say that the car will have a combined specification: it will have new features, but in some points we will return to the previous configuration used before Spain.
Hopefully by the end of the week we will know exactly what led to such serious difficulties and what direction we should take in the future.”
One of the talking points this weekend was the future of Daniel Ricciardo, as Helmut Marko indicated that Liam Lawson would replace him next year. Therefore, Yuki was asked a somewhat provocative question: which qualities of a possible future partner should be preferred to him: youth or experience?
“Both!” – the Japanese racer Visa RB got out.
