The head of the Pirelli racing division, Mario Isola, summarized the results of Sunday’s race in Spielberg and assessed the effectiveness of the Hard and Medium compounds.
Mario Isola: “Sparks fly when you least expect it! Two-thirds of the race was fairly linear, but a small problem at Max Verstappen’s second pit stop left the two fastest drivers of the weekend in a tight and exciting duel. All this contributed to the exciting final laps. Ultimately, it all ended with George Russell’s second career win. Our congratulations to him and Mercedes! Overall the race was very entertaining and we saw a lot of overtaking.
There were no surprises from our side: the tires behaved exactly as expected. Strategic predictions also came true: medium and hard compositions were the main choice in the race.
The Medium tires probably performed a little better, especially on faster cars. The Red Bull drivers opted for the C4 compound for the third stint, although they still had two Hard kits left. But the reason was that they continued to struggle with their rivals in this part of the race.
On the other hand, the C3 compound offered less degradation and worked well for those who ran a short first stint on the Medium and then used the greater stability of the white-stripe tyres to earn points. We are talking about Haas drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen, but also RB’s Daniel Ricciardo.”
