In Hungary, Max Verstappen took his eighth win of the season, from tenth place. Since it is traditionally difficult to overtake at the Hungaroring, the right team strategy has contributed to Max’s success.
Hann Schmitz, chief strategy engineer at Red Bull Racing, said the decision to abandon the start on Hard tires in favor of Soft was key to the win.
Hanna Schmitz: “As we started from the middle of the pack, the ‘classic’ strategy was to start on harder tires and a long first stint, given the difficulty of overtaking in Hungary.
However, in the pre-race briefing we discussed that if the road surface was slightly wet and cold the alternative would be to start on Soft as this compound looks better in such conditions.
On the circles exiting the pits on the starting grid, both drivers unanimously said that the tires practically didn’t hold the track, even though both had soft tires. We talked about this for a long time, also with Christian Horner, and decided to start on Soft. At this point, light rain was felt in the sky, so this composition was better suited for such conditions.
We were more concerned about regaining enough positions in the first stint, but both drivers did a great job.”
