Haas driver Mick Schumacher may be out of contract with the Formula 1 team for the 2023 season due to recent developments in the transfer market.
The German driver’s contract with Haas will expire at the end of the season and the team is in no rush to extend it. The option to move to Aston Martin to replace Sebastian Vettel did not materialize – Vettel will be replaced by Fernando Alonso.
Another alternative to Schumacher could be a move to Williams, but there are plenty of candidates to team up with Alex Albon without him. It is believed that Mercedes expects Nick de Vries, a driver from its works Formula E team, to get behind the wheel of Williams in exchange for a discount on engines.
The American owners of Williams from Dorilton Capital are looking to their compatriot Logan Sargent and team boss Yost Capito is not against a continuation of the collaboration with Nicholas Latifi, as the driver’s father is a regular part of the budget.
Mick Schumacher has been backed by Ferrari for years, but the option to move to Alfa Romeo, whose cars are powered by Italian power plants, seems unlikely. Valtteri Bottas’ place in the team is unwavering and pending Formula 1’s return to China next season, they are most likely not going to turn Guanyu Zhou into Alfa Romeo.
If they nevertheless decide to refuse the services of the Chinese racer, then the team has a very fast and promising participant in the youth program, Theo Purscher. Should a vacancy arise at Alfa Romeo, Theo will be the first number on the list of candidates.
In fact, the only option for Mick Schumacher to continue his career in Formula 1 is to renew his contract with Haas, which team leader Gunther Steiner knows all too well. He has already said he has no plans to discuss contract issues during the summer break, so Mick will have to wait for his fate to be decided until at least the end of August, or even the end of the season.
