Toto Wolff: A mistake led to disqualification

A few hours after the finish of the Belgian Grand Prix, race winner George Russell was disqualified because the car did not meet the technical regulations. Instead of the 798.0 kg required by the regulations, the car weighed 796.5 kg.

Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff admitted in his comments on the disqualification that the car weighed less than the minimum permitted weight due to a team error in calculations.

Toto Wolff: “We take this decision for granted, but it is what it is: a mistake has been made.

A winning double would be a great result before the summer break, it couldn’t have been better. A very positive result from the race is the fact that both our cars were the benchmark for everyone, even though our drivers followed different strategies. Who would have thought that a few months ago? It was really nice to see.”

Asked if Russell’s car could have sustained damage and lost parts, leading to the weight loss, Toto replied: “No. You could argue that the weight wasn’t enough because George couldn’t pick up bits of rubber from the track, but that’s no excuse.

The team must draw conclusions from this situation. This was a big blow for George. Imagine that he dreamed of victories since he was a child, today he won, but then this result was taken away from him. But he will achieve many more first places.”
