The Sauber team goes into the summer break without having earned any points. At Spa, Valtteri Bottas finished sixteenth, but was promoted to fifteenth after George Russell was disqualified. His partner Guanyu Zhou retired due to technical problems with the car.
Valtteri Bottas (15th): “Today was a good attempt. We followed an alternative strategy, but the decision didn’t work. We probably should have stayed on track and then there would have been a chance to finish a few positions higher, but most likely we still wouldn’t have earned any points.
Positive results include finishing slightly higher than our main rivals, but this is still not enough to get into the top ten, so we need to continue to progress and improve in all areas.
The team has a well-deserved summer break ahead of us. The first half of the season was difficult, so we will try to regain our energy and return to Zandvoort at the end of August with renewed strength.”
Guanyu Zhou (departure): “Today’s race concluded a disappointing first half of the season. The day started well: I decided to start on Hard, the pace and balance of the car were good and I was able to gain a few positions.
I overtook two Haas drivers, but first there was a loss of power and then the brakes failed, forcing me to stop. Today we had potential thanks to a start on Hard, which opened up additional strategic options. That makes the meeting even more disappointing for the whole team.
There is a summer break ahead, during which you will need to recover and return refreshed. I have high expectations for Zandvoort – in the next phase I will receive new items that have already been installed on Valtteri’s car in the last two races. This will be a turning point for our team.”
