Commenting on the race at Zandvoort, former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle said that Max Verstappen slowed down closer to the finish to show his team how big the gap is and how much more needs to be done. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko disagrees with this assumption.
Helmut Marko: “Martin Brundle’s assumption that Max deliberately drove slowly is incorrect. But since Lando could not be caught, he did not take the risk any longer.
The difference with Perez was simply that he used different settings. We thought that with more downforce he would slide less, but in the end he lost top speed and the tyre wear remained high.
If this continues, the title will be in danger. But we believe that on the one hand the Zandvoort circuit was ideal for McLaren and on the other hand the temperature was also low, so everything worked out well for them.
“It is clear that we need to restore the previous balance, and our updates must not only have an effect in theory, but also on the track. We have a strong team, I am confident that everything will be fine.”
