Nico Hulkenberg’s partner this weekend is Oliver Berman – Kevin Magnussen has collected 12 penalty points and will miss the race. In Baku Niko called on the stewards to reconsider the rules for handing out fines…
Nico Hulkenberg: “I didn’t understand why Kevin got two penalty points for the incident with Gasly, and a ten-second time penalty was too harsh a penalty. This is not just my opinion – this is what most racers think.
I had an incident with Alonso in the sprint race in Austria when I tried to overtake in turn three and locked the tyres and went wide and he went off the track, but that’s racing. To overtake we have to step out of our comfort zone and take risks.
In my case with Fernando, as in Kevin’s case with Pierre, both riders said: “It’s nothing”, but every time there is a small contact, the stewards want to intervene and punish the participants.
“We probably need to review the rules for handing out penalties and give the drivers a chance to fight, otherwise it will be boring and dull because we won’t be able to overtake without the risk of a penalty. I’m sure this issue will be raised in the drivers’ briefing and we will discuss it with race director Nils Wittich.”
