With eight rounds to go, Ferrari trail Red Bull Racing by 39 points in the battle for the constructors’ championship. Carlos Sainz admitted in Baku on Thursday that he was surprised that the Scuderia could continue to claim the title after an unimpressive run of results during the summer stages.
Carlos Sainz: “I am a little surprised that we are still in the race for the title, given that the team spent a third of the season between Monaco and Monza. We looked strong in the first third of the season, bad in the second third and now going into the last third.
We had a bad time halfway through the year, but we are still in the fight for the title. This shows how much progress the team has made in terms of racing. This is why we are earning points even in situations where the car is not as fast as at the beginning of the season or in Monza. And this has allowed us to stay in the fight, as well as the fact that Charles and I are very consistent.
He and I always show good results, help each other, earn points and get the most out of the car. I think my partner and I have a very difficult season and the team supports us very well.
Let’s see if we can repeat in Baku the same speed as in Monza and Monaco. We will try to fight.”
