Leo Turini: Ferrari missed a big opportunity

Leo Turini, a famous Italian journalist and passionate Ferrari fan, summed up the results of the Scuderia’s performance in Baku…

I’ll be brief and, I hope, not too harsh. We have to admit that Ferrari missed a big chance. If Leclerc and his engineers hadn’t had too much confidence in the tyres, Piastri, driving a McLaren, wouldn’t have beaten the Monegasque on the fantastic Baku circuit. But an excess of confidence meant that the hard-won lead in the first segment disappeared in the blink of an eye. It’s a shame, frankly – the Scuderia had everything to repeat the Monza success.

In addition, there was the regret of the accident at the finish involving Sainz and Perez. I will not comment on it for a long time; this happens in racing. Perhaps a little more responsibility lies with the Mexican driver, but apart from all prejudices, this episode can be summarized in the classic definition of a racing incident. I did not see any bad intentions here.

Unfortunately, the accident cost Ferrari a podium and 15 points, which would have been crucial to keeping their hopes alive in the Constructors’ Championship race. Frankly, it was a shame. At least for those who, like me, live on emotions.

With all this there is also a lot of good. I can’t believe I’m saying this. At this stage of the season, starting with the Dutch Grand Prix, the red car became more competitive. The latest SF24 updates are working. At least on some tracks. Now we have to take advantage of this.

Paradoxically, it is a good sign to see the disappointment on Leclerc’s face after the chequered flag. It means that Maranello is finally trying to achieve its goal.

As I keep repeating: Ferrari is contributing to a revolution that has surprised almost everyone. For the first time in a long time, Red Bull is no longer leading the constructors’ championship and it seems that Verstappen has lost confidence in his car.

If McLaren stops wasting its chances, Max’s defeat will no longer be just a hypothesis.
Therefore, Ferrari must heed the lesson it learned in Baku. Next Sunday evening in Singapore, Leclerc and Sainz, who won this race a year ago in masterly fashion, can return to success in Maranello. It is not certain that the autumn will be red, but there is certainly reason for optimism.
