Norris: I kept doing what I was doing all weekend

In Singapore, Lando Norris confirmed his speed by taking pole for the fifth time this season, and on the narrow city circuit that was half the battle. Oscar Piastri, his McLaren team-mate, was fifth.

Lando Norris (1st): “It wasn’t easy, especially in qualifying. It was hard to make progress and noticeably improve lap times. At the same time, it seemed to me that everyone else was going faster and faster, especially towards the end of qualifying.

But it is important that my result was enough for pole position, especially at the Singapore circuit. Overall I am happy! From the very beginning of the weekend I was in a good mood, I am confident, although maybe less in qualifying, but we still managed to do it.

I liked the end of qualifying – my heart was beating faster and I enjoyed it. The last lap wasn’t as good as the one before the red flags, and I could always improve a bit. But the car made a good impression and when you have confidence you can really attack and try to do the best lap possible.

Because I believed we had the speed, I didn’t need to attack too aggressively and just kept doing what I’ve been doing all weekend. I didn’t need to push the envelope, even though it’s difficult. The track is uneven, the car is moving all the time and you can easily make a mistake if you brake even a metre too late.

If you overdo it, you will pay a high price. But I kept calm and completed the task for today. Let’s see what we can achieve tomorrow.”
