Fernando Alonso reached the qualifying final in Singapore and set the seventh fastest time. After the session, the Aston Martin driver admitted that the result was higher than he expected.
His partner Lance Stroll finished the battle in the first session and set the seventeenth fastest time.
Fernando Alonso (7th): “I am very happy with seventh place at the start and the performance in qualifying. The weaknesses of the car were exposed at this circuit, but we worked hard to improve the situation.
I was a bit pessimistic for qualifying, because the pace in the third practice didn’t look good. However, I was able to put the laps together and thanks to the fact that several riders didn’t set a time in the final, I took a higher position than our speed allowed. We accept this, but don’t forget that points are awarded based on the race result, so we still have to bring things to a close.”
Lance walk (17th): “The weekend in Singapore is difficult. I have problems with balance and grip that were never solved. The gaps are minimal and you have to have confidence in the car to attack.
It’s difficult to overtake on this circuit, but we’ll see what we can do in the race. Hopefully we’ll get some chances.”
