Red Bull will face key personnel decisions in the coming weeks, and the championship-winning team’s boss Christian Horner spoke to Sky Sports about the considerations that will guide them.
Christian Horner: “We have given many young drivers a great opportunity to prove themselves for a long time. The Red Bull system really demands results from them, they have to perform at a high level. Of course Max Verstappen shows such results, and Sergio Perez is lagging behind this year.
Although he did quite well last year, taking second place in the championship, and our team won the Constructors’ Championship.
At the same time, we have to look to the future and we have a lot of young talent. On our bench is Liam Lawson. But when we look at riders like Franco Colapinto and Oliver Berman, we can’t say for sure whether he will perform at their level? That will only become clear with time.
In Formula 2 we have Isaac Hajjar, who until recently was the leader in this championship. But I would especially like to mention Arvid Lindblad, a very talented driver who is currently active in F3. In general, our youth program is quite extensive, although there is a bit of a gap at the moment, so we want to pause for a moment and think about what are our options for the future?
“That said, we are not afraid to go beyond our group of drivers. For example, George Russell will be released from his contractual obligations to Mercedes at the end of next year. It would be foolish not to take that into account. But there are other talented drivers whose contracts are also expiring.”
Perhaps Horner’s comment about Russell can be seen as a response to Toto Wolff’s repeated statements that Mercedes are interested in Verstappen’s services.
