Mercedes chief race engineer Andrew Shovlin summed up the results of the failed performance in Singapore…
Andrew Shovlin: “Having qualified within a few tenths of Norris and Verstappen, we were hoping to fight for the podium and put Lewis on soft tyres at the start in an attempt to make up positions on the first lap. Unfortunately, with the lack of pace and inability to control the temperature of the rear tyres, this decision proved to be the wrong one and the race was very difficult for Lewis.
George Russell had a defensive strategy. We had to choose which battles to fight. It was clear that we didn’t have enough speed to fight Oscar Piastri of McLaren. He was much faster, had newer tires, it was impossible to stop him. But George managed to minimize the losses and stop the attack of Charles Leclerc at Ferrari.
“We were competitive at some points during the weekend and we know the car has speed in certain situations. We will take a lot of new products with us to the next round in Austin and hopefully this will bring us closer to the fight for first place.”
