McLaren conducted private tests at Silverstone this week. The British team brought the 2021 MCL35M and 2022 MCL36 to the circuit, with McLaren IndyCar driver Pato O’Ward and team leader Zac Brown behind the wheel.
The team’s press office published a video in which Pato stands on the straight before the Copse corner and comments on his boss’s driving: “I’m trying to understand if Zach takes his foot off the accelerator less and less before the corner, as this turn is taken with the accelerator pedal on the floor.
Zach told me how well he did in the simulator, but the simulator is more like a video game. When you get behind the wheel of a real car, you understand what it can do, but you have to trust it.
It’s nice if your boss understands from his own experience what you go through every weekend. Zach is a real racer and a big fan of motorsports. He loves racing.”
For Pato O’Ward, the tests provided additional experience in a Formula 1 car, although the Mexican driver’s prospects of securing a contract as lead driver in the near future are unlikely. However, it is possible that O’Ward will return to the wheel of Formula 1 during the first free practice on one of the remaining stages of the season.
