The American Haas project exists successfully in Formula 1, but the American Andretti project was not allowed to go out. Former Haas F1 boss Günther Steiner explained the difference in an interview with RacingNews 365…
Günter Steiner: “Three or four representatives of the new teams asked me about the application procedure in the case of Haas F1. But as the conditions have become stricter, the stakes have increased: each team is worth about a billion dollars, so you have to act more carefully. The problem now is that the FIA allowed Andretti, but the FOM did not.
They have collected signatures from the teams, but the teams have no voting rights, they can sign whatever they want, but nothing happens without permission from the FOM.
I first visited everyone, spoke to the teams and convinced them that it would be better this way, but not publicly. First the deal, then the statement. You don’t have to make a statement to close the deal. However, everyone acts at their own discretion.
Andretti has a chance. FOM left the door open by asking if GM could supply the powertrains. I have no idea if they responded with something FOM or not, but they have to do it.
Red Bull is developing its own power plant. They showed what they were going to do and then it was pretty easy. Audi has built a new base in Germany to show its investment, but I haven’t heard anything about GM. But I don’t have all the information.”
