In an interview with Racingnews365, former Haas F1 boss Guenther Steiner responded to allegations that he tried to force Mick Schumacher out of Formula 1 when he sacked him from the team.
Gunter Steiner: “It won’t be easy for Mick to come back, but it would be good because he has something to prove. If he gets the chance, I’ll be more than happy.
I have been accused of wanting Mick to leave Formula 1, but that is not true. I never wanted this, I have nothing against it, but after a three-year break it’s not easy to come back. “He doesn’t have five or ten years of experience in Formula 1. He has only had two mediocre seasons, so a comeback is unlikely.”
Due to Haas F1’s financial problems, Magnussen and Grosjean were replaced in 2021 by two young drivers: Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, who brought their sponsors with them. Steiner was asked who would be a better fit for Schumacher or Mazepin in their debut season.
‘I had no choice, and beggars can’t choose. I had to do what I had to do, but of course it would be easier for Nikita or Mick to make progress if they had an experienced rider next to them that they could rely on,” said Schneider. “The team couldn’t tell where they needed to improve. In such a situation, someone has to be nearby very quickly.”
