Magnussen: I don’t think Austin is the right path for us

Speaking to the press in the paddock of the COTA Texas Speedway, Kevin Magnussen complained that he had only completed one race in seven weeks, and although this is a bit of an exaggeration, the Dane is understandable.

What he means is that he had to miss the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan due to the accumulated penalty points, after which he got behind the wheel again in Singapore, almost four weeks ago.

Kevin Magnussen: “I haven’t raced much lately because I was suspended for a stage. That’s why I only did one race in Singapore after Monza. It feels like this period has been quite quiet for me.

Looking ahead to the weekend, I don’t think Austin is the right track for us, although this year we have been more competitive on tracks that require medium level downforce. But here we need a higher pressure level, so we don’t know yet how we are going to configure the machine.

We have prepared a number of technical innovations for this phase and we would like to quickly see how effectively they will work. I think most of the updates we introduced this season worked great, so that’s a good trend.

We have a fierce rivalry with RB for sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship and are determined to take this team into battle – we’ll see what we can do. At the same time, Williams doesn’t give us much, so we have to pay attention to what’s happening behind us, so the situation is quite interesting.

In several previous races our VF-24 was faster than VCARB 01, although they may have been slightly ahead of us in qualifying. But we are racing a bit more confidently and we hope that we can take another small step forward this weekend, allowing us to stay ahead of RB in qualifying.”
