Yuki Tsunoda: Thanks to Liam for the slipstream

Yuki Tsunoda set the eleventh fastest time in qualifying for the American Grand Prix. His RB teammate Liam Lawson was third in the first session, but risking a penalty with losing position at the start, the New Zealand driver showed no time in the second part of qualifying and came onto the track alone to beat Tsunoda to speed up. on the straights.

Yuki Tsunoda (11th): “The team did well today. The sprint proved difficult, although I enjoyed the intense battle, but unfortunately we didn’t have enough speed. Although I did my best to minimize the losses. I’m disappointed that I dropped back in the sprint because I had a chance to earn points.

Unfortunately I failed to reach the final qualifying stage. Too bad, because I was very close to tenth place. However, I have a good starting position in the race. Thanks to Liam for organizing the slipstream for me; he did a great job helping me with the fast laps.

We have made a lot of changes to the set-up since the sprint and the team has a lot of information to analyze as Liam and I’s cars are slightly different cars.

This weekend was full of ups and downs, but we learned a lot that will help us in the future. I have no doubt that it will be a difficult race, but we will do everything we can to get some points.”

Liam Lawson (15th): “I had a high pace in the first part of qualifying. After Friday’s sessions we adjusted the settings, which allowed us to achieve greater speed.

My task was to get out of the first session and in the second session help Yuki reach the final by organizing a slipstream for him on the straights. On the second attempt it worked fine, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. Too bad, because he was so close to the exit.

It will probably be a tough race. Despite the long DRS zones, overtaking on this circuit is difficult – you need a clear speed advantage, especially if you are in the DRS train. In any case, everything is possible, so we will try to keep everything we have good on Sunday, but it will be difficult to earn points.

On the one hand I’m happy, but on the other hand I’m angry: we have a fast car, but we have to serve a fine. However, I will try to make the best of it on Sunday and the following races.”
