Max Verstappen qualified second in Austin, just 0.031 seconds behind polesitter Lando Norris. The Red Bull Racing driver believes he could have gone faster on the second attempt, but it had to be interrupted due to the departure of George Russell.
The time shown by Sergio Perez on the first attempt was canceled for exceeding the limits of the track, and Sergio could not complete the second attempt due to the departure of Russell, placing the Mexican in tenth place in the protocol.
Max Verstappen (2nd): “On the first attempt in the final I lost quite a lot of time in turn 19. It’s a shame, but I knew I would try again, but unfortunately I couldn’t complete it. Otherwise I might have enjoyed it, but sometimes that’s how it goes.
In any case, I’m starting from the front row, although the potential of the car allowed me to take pole position, and that in itself is very good.
The sprint showed that we are competitive over the race distance. We adjusted the settings a bit and the car became even better, so I hope for a positive performance in the race.”
Sergio Perez (10th): “It’s a shame that everything went this way in the final, because for me everything turned out quite positively. We have learned a lot about tire performance and have made significant progress. Unfortunately I couldn’t participate in the final. In the second session I was fifth and all things considered I think we looked quite strong.
The race will be difficult because I will start in traffic. I have to try to overtake my rivals as quickly as possible, then I will have many more opportunities. I hope I can reach the top soon. However, given my starting position I don’t think I can qualify for the podium, but you never know how things will develop in the race.”
