Lewis Hamilton withdrew early from the race in Austin and has apologized to the team, but it is unclear what caused his departure. His teammate George Russell had a similar accident yesterday and finished the race sixth…
George Russell (6th): “I’m happy with how I ran the race. We didn’t know what to expect, but after finishing sixth from the pit lane, ahead of one of the Red Bull cars, it’s amazing. We did our best in a difficult situation.
The car was fast, especially on hard tires. We were able to stretch the first stint and at the end of the race we had a new set of tires to attack.
In the coming days we will analyze this weekend’s progress. It is very difficult to control the car at times; Lewis flew into the gravel during the race. When we find the optimal settings, the machine can show strong results, but this cannot be done consistently. I think the car allowed us to fight for the podium this weekend, but we need to increase the range. Next week in Mexico we will try to make up for it.”
Lewis Hamilton (departure): “At that moment I wasn’t even attacking, I was just warming up the tyres. Suddenly the front axle started to sway and the rear axle just spun around. George had the same accident yesterday.
After Saturday’s accident, George returned to the old car and had no problems with it. So the reason could be the latest update.
We will carry out as detailed an investigation as possible and decide next week whether to work with the old or new chassis specification.”
