We already told you that the power plant in Liam Lawson’s car was replaced on Friday. With Formula 1 regulations limiting the number of power units per season, not per driver, but per car, Lawson’s power unit countdown continued from where Daniel Ricciardo left off.
As of Friday, Lawson’s car was equipped with a fifth engine, a fifth turbine, a fifth MGU-H engine generator, a fifth MGU-K engine generator, a third energy storage device and a third control electronics unit. All these substitutions exceeded the allowed number of substitutions per season, causing the FIA to fine the driver with a loss of 60 places at the start.
In this case, the number of positions lost is formal. There is a clause in the regulations that says that if a driver loses more than 15 places, he must start behind the driver who last competed in qualifying.
