Pilot “Red Bull” Max Verstappen received a 5-second penalty after completing the sprint of the 21st stage of the Formula 1 championship, the Brazilian Grand Prix, reports the press service of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).
The stewards came to the conclusion that the championship leader had violated the rules of the virtual safety car mode – his time was faster than the minimum allowed. Verstappen moved from third to fourth place in the final sprint protocol, Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) finished third.
Thus, the three-time champion lost a point in the individual competition. He has 367 points and is 44 points ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris (323), winner of the sprint.
At 9:00 p.m. (Moscow time) qualifying should begin at the Sao Paulo circuit. As a result, Verstappen will lose five places at the start of Sunday’s race due to a fine for replacing his car’s internal combustion engine.
