The WEC season finale took place in Bahrain this weekend, and at the end of the 8-hour marathon, the Porsche drivers who competed in the Hypercar category in the No. 6 car – Kevin Estre, Andre Lotterer and Laurent Vanthour – became world champions. At the same time, today they finished outside the top ten, being only 11th, but the reserve of points gained in the previous stages was more than enough to secure victory in the World Endurance Championship.
In the team competition, the factory Toyota Gazoo Racing again became the strongest, and this was decided in the final stages of the race, when Sebastien Buemi overtook Matt Campbell, the driver of the second Porsche team driving hypercar No. 5, at the track.
But the Porsche drivers could not hold on to 2nd place, which was taken from them by Antonio Fuoco from the Ferrari factory team – his team led for a significant part of the distance, but missed out on victory due to a lengthy final pit stop.
It was these circumstances combined that allowed Toyota to stay ahead of Porsche and win the team competition, albeit by a very small margin.
The crew of the Italian team AF Corse, consisting of Robert Kubica, Robert Schwartzman and Yifei Ye, also driving a Ferrari 499P hypercar, took 9th place in the championship and also finished ninth in the final race in Bahrain.
